Warning of the Century

Warnings of the Century by Venerable Master Hsuan Hua

Why are people oblivious and confused? It’s because they do not know where they came from and where they will go. The image you see every day in the mirror is not the real you! If you want to know your original self, you must turn the light within to reflect and seek within yourself. People have become obsessed with the five desires; they are stifled by the shackles of wealth, sex, fame, food, and sleep, yet still, they are willing to be enslaved by the five desires. (translated by James Lan.)

Our greed is higher than the sky, thicker than the earth’s crust, and deeper than the sea. It’s a bottomless pit that no matter how long we try, can never be filled.

A person is truly poor if he has no virtue.

Where can we go to look for our original treasure? In the Avatamsaka Sutra; as the saying goes, “You will never know of the wealth of the Buddha if you do not read the Avatamsaka Sutra .” The Avatamsaka Sutra is the king among the kings of sutras. (translated by Ash M.)

If we act based on the three poisons of greed, anger, and delusion, the world will be enveloped in darkness, and disasters will occur. On the contrary, if we act based on precepts, samadhi, and wisdom, the sky will be clear, the earth will be peaceful, and auspiciousness will pervade. Therefore it is said, disasters are rampant in places where bad people abound, and auspiciousness prevails in places where good people gather. In essence, disasters and auspiciousness depend on everyone’s actions.

We are yet to realize Buddhahood because we only engage in lip service.

Every phenomenon is the Buddhadharma and is thus unattainable. Every being and phenomenon in the world is teaching the Dharma and lecturing sutras to us. Every one of us should concentrate on reciting and memorizing our own sutra. Do not be confused in cause and effect. That’s the true sutra. (translated by Ash M.)

If you always look at others’ faults, that means you have suffering; if you do not have suffering, then you will see everyone as a Buddha. This seems to be very simple and straightforward, but you just cannot do it!

We do not live just to eat; we should live to be useful to the world, to help other people, and to benefit the world. We should ‘with kindness and compassion, propagate the Dharma and teach living beings on behalf of the heavens, and with loyalty and filiality, save the people for the country.’

Each day you do not correct your faults is a day you make no self-improvement. (translated by Katherine Wang.)

Afflictions are just Bodhi means that when you have afflictions, if you are able to recognize and transcend them, then that is Bodhi. It is not putting aside afflictions and searching for Bodhi elsewhere.

AIDS is an illness that decimates nations and brings humans to extinction. I hope that the Chinese do not learn from the behavior of the West so that China will not be destroyed.

People who practice Buddhism should curb their desires. They should purify their minds and limit their desires. This is crucial, and it concerns the fundamental problem of health.

The reason you are able to take refuge with the Three Jewels and encounter each other in this life is because of the deep roots of goodness you planted in the past. Now that you have gathered here, you should all bring forth the Bodhi resolve and not be a worm or scum of Buddhism. If someone harshly criticizes Buddhism, don’t debate with them. Commit yourself to cultivation to prove Buddhism to them. Teach by example, not with words.

The wars in the world arise from small conflicts within our minds. As a Chinese saying goes, “Each and everyone is responsible for the rise and fall of nations.” We shouldn’t say, “That’s their problem, not mine.” If nobody has [internal] conflicts, then all the wars in the world will subside.

Don’t shine the light outwards; instead, constantly turn the light inwards, illuminating ourselves to see if we are animals, ghosts, or something else.

What is virtue? It’s to benefit others first and abide by the principle of not obstructing others, which is just infusing our minds with benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and trustworthiness.

Why don’t we have any responses from cultivation? It’s because we have not put our mad minds to rest yet. (translated by James Lan.)

Good comes from the mind and evil also comes from the mind.

The three poisons—greed, hatred, and delusion—are more potent than opium, alcoholism, and even the highly toxic arsenic. While these toxic substances poison the physical body, the three poisons harm the Dharma body. Therefore, they are the greatest obstacles to our cultivation.

To practice the Buddhadharma is to refrain from all evil and do all good.

To see through is to understand clearly, to let go is to be liberated, and to be liberated is to be at ease. We are not at ease because we are being seized by thieves and turned by states. (translated by James Lan.)

True happiness can be achieved by not yearning. “When one no longer yearns, one no longer worries.” Only when you no longer yearn is it true happiness, true stability, and peacefulness of your self-nature.

Human beings’ greatest shortcoming is emotional love. One is caught in its grip day and night, unable to let go of it even for a moment. If we can channel our desire for sex towards studying Buddhism, then we’ll become Buddhas quickly.

Put away all your trivial cleverness and smarts; do not think you understand everything. If you think so, then you do not truly understand Buddhism.

Here at CTTB, we do not condone flattery, brown-nosing, sweet talk, and the like. (translated by Derrick Gan.)

The worst behavior in the monastery is to not cultivate. Whoever does not cultivate will surely fall [into lower realms] in the future.

We cultivate to “develop dullness.” To be “dull” is to be very dumb. The dumber you are, the better it is for your cultivation, to the point that you’re too dumb to know anything and to have any false thoughts.

Cultivators should not think of themselves. They should throw their “self” into a trash pile and constantly think for the common good. They should work in harmony with others, take a step back to make progress, be conservative in everything, and avoid the limelight. As soon as they are in the limelight, there will be problems. (translated by Bo Han Zhu and Marvin Wang.)

When the Master comes to CTTB, you attend his Sutra lectures; normally you don’t regularly participate in morning and evening recitations, or rejoice in listening to the Sutra lectures. This is being selfish– only taking without giving back —  and goes against the fundamental spirit of the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas. We are all one, so we cannot act independently and neglect the entire community.

Who is the enemy of cultivators? It is not the demon king, but selfishness. If you act out of selfishness, you will not succeed at anything. Even if you do succeed, it will be fake. (translated by Bo Han Zhu and Marvin Wang.)

Serious cultivators do not waste even one second on discursive thoughts. As the saying goes, “Not understanding the one great matter is like losing one’s parents.” When we do not understand the great matter of birth and death, it is as heartbreaking as the passing of our parents.

The Buddhadharma is as deep as the ocean. We have to cultivate diligently with vigor and valor in order to gain some accomplishment in our practice.

Cultivators should have the right knowledge and right views. Do not mistake the rights for the wrongs and vice versa. Be clear about black and white. Do not pass off fish eyes for pearls or pretend to be skilled. Otherwise, you’ll have wrong knowledge and wrong views and will never realize Buddhahood.

We know clearly that discursive thoughts are mere illusions, so why do we still engage in them? We know clearly that they are just discursive thoughts, so why can’t we get rid of them? This is a bad habit of ordinary people: doing things that we know are wrong. To be perfectly frank, you still cannot see through and let go of things. Being attached to this and that and fixated on men and women, you’re throwing away precious time. (translated by Ash M.)

Kindness and compassion arise from one’s self-nature, without the need to be deliberate or pretentious. It is not about pleasing anyone on purpose—that would be hypocritical. People grow day by day, and slowly but surely, they come to understand the principles, and compassion arises spontaneously in their hearts, without having to take any deliberate action. Try to be compassionate deliberately, and you come off as flattering; try not to be compassionate on purpose, and you become cold and indifferent. Neither exceeding nor falling short, you should always seek the middle path; this is to achieve the absence of thought and mind. (translated by James Lan.)

While studying Buddhism, there is no need to be overly ambitious; you only need to experience it in your daily life. ‘The ordinary mind is the Way; the straightforward mind is the monastery.’ Seeking what is far must be from what is near, and climbing what is high must start from where is low. To act differently than ordinary people in your daily life is to be a good Buddhist.

Buddhists should pay attention to the law of cause and effect and be careful in everything they do, and they should not carelessly slander other people. (translated by Katherine Wang.)

When you have not a single thought, there won’t be any ghosts. When it gets to the point that you have nothing, then everything will come. All the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will come; why is this so? It is because you do not have anything, so the Buddhas will come. Otherwise, the Buddhas will not come. In the former case, you fully understand your nature, other people’s nature, the nature of objects, and the nature of the universe. Buddhas are you, and you are the Buddhas. The four notions (a self, a person, a living being, and lifespan) are all gone, so what afflictions are there? (translated by Katherine Wang)

If you understand, then everything will be the ‘Patriarch’s intention in coming from the West.’ If you don’t understand, then you will lose your temper at everything. (translated by Katherine Wang)

One good thought can bring peace to the world. One evil thought can cause terrible storms and gales. So, if all the citizens of a country are kind, uphold the five precepts, and practice the ten good deeds, everything will be fine in this country.

If there are genuine cultivators, Buddhism will flourish; otherwise, Buddhism will become extinct.

When cultivating the Way, do not be afraid of difficulty, suffering, poverty, or hunger. If you are afraid of these, you won’t be able to cultivate. Cultivators should be the exact opposite of worldly people who pursue the five desires and cannot let go. (translated by Qin Rui Y. & Qing Zheng K.)

If you are able to restrain your desires, then you are upholding the precepts; if you are unable to restrain your desires, you are not upholding the precepts. (translated by James Lan.)

It is requisite to observe the rules when living in a monastery. You should attend the ceremonies in the Buddha Hall and Dining Hall, regarding them as more important than any other job. Follow the assembly and do not act differently. Otherwise, you are not welcome to live in the community. (translated by Yifan Chan.)

If you cultivate the Way but do not understand it, as soon as you gain some benefits, you will lose them right away. You are taught to be free of desire and emotional love, yet your emotional love and desire become even stronger. From morning to night, you think about emotional love and desire, defiled thoughts as such. Therefore, the water of wisdom in your mind becomes turbid; when turbidity arises, wisdom will disappear and you will not understand the Way. So, even though you cultivate day in and day out, you will still be unable to realize fruition or see the Way. Why? It is because you harbor emotional love and desire in your mind. If you don’t have thoughts of emotional love and desire, you will be able to see the Way sooner. (translated and revised by Qin Rui Y. & Qing Zheng K.)

If you do not work hard and cultivate seriously, you will have to bear the consequences. Take the whetstone as an example. You may not see the wear and tear as you sharpen your knife on it, but the stone still wears away day by day.

Ignorance is analogous to a dark chamber. If you have wisdom, the dark chamber will brighten up. The two main things in the world that lead to the downfall of cultivators are wealth and sex. Cultivators who cannot let go of wealth, crave money. Those who cannot let go of sexual desire, crave sex. People who lust for wealth or sex will never accomplish anything in their cultivation. (translated by Yifan Chan.)

Having sufficient “essence,” or vital energy, keeps you from the cold; having sufficient qi wards off hunger; and having sufficient “spirit” casts away drowsiness. Essence, qi, and spirit are the Three Jewels, like the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha.

It can be said that in our cultivation, “Off by a hair in the beginning, off by a thousand miles at the end.” We cannot be careless even in the slightest. Just having a false thought of a hair’s breadth, not following the precepts, or deviating from the path may instantly bring harsh karmic retributions and punishment.

Don’t be so attached, for you just burden yourself. What are burdens? They’re just your bad habits. Once you have these, you can’t take the first step to cross to the other shore. (translated by Bo Han Zhu and Marvin Wang.)

Genuine cultivators do not want to be provided with delicious food or nice lodging wherever they go because such thoughts will lead to their downfall. They try to maintain a low profile everywhere and don’t want to be pampered with comfort, feeling neither pleased when they are treated well nor displeased when they are treated poorly. (translated by Ash M.)

Whoever can refrain from getting angry will be in accord with the Buddhas’ teachings and will successfully become a Buddha.

We humans always neglect the root (fundamentals) while concentrating on the branches (details), place cultivation second while placing making money first, and forget the fundamental principles while spending our efforts on the trivial. Making money can only sustain your physical life while studying Buddhadharma can nourish the wisdom life of your Dharma body and increase your wisdom. You should select a Sutra that resonates with you and study it every day, instead of only focusing on making money.

To learn mantras, you must first be sincere and righteous; if you are not righteous, any mantras you learn will be deviant. Only with righteousness, can you have responses from learning mantras. (translated by Bo Han Zhu and Marvin Wang.)

There is no greed in your radiant inherent nature, in your spiritual awareness, or in your inherent wisdom. When your heart is consumed with greed, you are like a mirror that is covered with dust. Hence, as we work hard at our cultivation, we should keep reminding ourselves not to be greedy for quantity, speed, or bargains. (translated by Ash M.)

With ghosts in your mind, you will be afraid of ghosts. Without ghosts in your mind, ghosts will be afraid of you. (translated by Bo Han Zhu and Marvin Wang.)

Although you are now born as a human, you do not make good use of your human form to cultivate. Why are you procrastinating? If you wait until you have lost your human body, that will be too late (translated by Ash M.)

All of you should not seek from afar or seek for profound and lofty Dharma; upon hearing this verse for opening a sutra, “The unsurpassed, profound, and wondrous Dharma,” you immediately look for the ‘unsurpassed, profound, and wondrous Dharma.’ In fact, the unsurpassed, profound, and wondrous Dharma is far away from you; you haven’t even taken the first step forward yet. Why do you forsake what is near to seek what is far, and renounce the root to chase after the branches? Why don’t you start applying effort toward your daily activities? Why do you run so far away? The ancient people said, ‘The Way is close at hand, yet you seek afar; the matter is easy, yet you search for every difficulty.’ (translated by Katherine Wang.)

Once you really no longer tell lies, heaven and earth will heed you should you call upon them.

Not fighting, not being greedy, not seeking, not being selfish, not pursuing personal advantage, and not telling lies — these are the most effective methods of cultivation. (translated by Derrick Gan.)

If you break the precept against sexual misconduct, then it is easy for you to break the precepts against killing, stealing, and lying. Therefore, breaking the precept against sexual misconduct includes breaking the precepts against killing, stealing, and lying. (translated by Katherine Wang.)

Why do you have afflictions? It is because your greed is not eliminated, and you haven’t seen things through and put them down yet. Thus, ‘there are thorns everywhere, and you bump into walls everywhere.’ If you are free of the four notions [of self, human, living beings, and lifespan], then who is in pain? If there is no one who is in pain, then where do afflictions come from?

Be outstanding dragon-elephants of the Dharma, not mice of the Dharma! (translated by Katherine Wang.)

There are eighty-four thousand stars in the sky and eighty-four thousand pores on a person’s body. Every one of us is connected to the world. The destruction of the world is caused by the ignorance of people. The energy that exists between heaven and Earth is connected with the energy of every human, and they cannot be separated. The energy of each person has its own source. When a person has a wholesome thought, it will replenish the positive energy in the world. However, every time a person loses his temper or has an affliction, the negative energy in the universe will increase. If we use greed, hatred, and delusion to solve problems, then the calamities in the world will increase. This is true for one person or many people. The places where evil people gather will harbor more ominous energy. Therefore, whether a place in the world is good or bad is closely related to every one of us. (translated by Qin Rui Y., Qin Zheng K. & Qin Xiang K.)

All worldly happiness is temporary, while ultimate happiness is eternal; this is why we should cultivate the Way. (translated by Katherine Wang.)

To study Buddhism is to learn to be compassionate, virtuous, and forgiving, to avoid confrontation with others, and to refrain from contention and fighting. (translated by Qin Rui Y., Qin Zheng K. & Qin Xiang K.)

Respect can transform stubbornness into gentleness. Bowing to the Buddha is bowing to the Buddha of our self-nature. When we become Buddhas in the future, it is also the Buddha of our own self-nature that we become.

The ancients said:” A noble person knows how to determine his own fate.” A person of virtue and integrity can change his own fate and transcend his destiny.

Why is there inauspiciousness? That is because one harbors inauspicious thoughts. Planting immoral causes will of course lead to woeful retributions. However, if one can rectify one’s own mistakes and do good deeds, one will be able to avoid calamities and encounter auspicious conditions. (translated by Qin Rui Y., Qin Zheng K., and Qin Xiang K.)

Why do we experience demonic karma? It is because we failed to heed the teachings of good teachers and accept their admonishments in our past lives. Instead, we engaged in false thinking and created bad karma. Thus, we are surrounded and afflicted by demonic karma this life, and things do not go our way.

I’m requesting a big donation from you all– please donate to me all of your temper, your ignorance, your afflictions, your hatred, and your delusion. (translated by Derrick Gan.)

The City of Ten Thousand Buddhas is a city of great compassion, a city of Shurangama, a city of ten thousand sages, a city of indestructibility, a city of Hands and Eyes, a city where the Right Dharma abides forever, a city of jewels, a city where people strive to cultivate and seek blessings and wisdom, and a city where Buddhas throughout the ten directions gather.

When you are diligent in your cultivation, you can even endure fatigue; this comes from sincerity in your hard work. (translated by James Lan.)

Cultivators should not waste the donations they receive from their donors. They should try their best to be frugal. Those who waste material goods and engage in self-indulgence will never accomplish anything in their cultivation as they do not cultivate blessings and wisdom. (translated by Yifan Chan.)

What is wisdom? It is being unselfish. What is false thinking? It is being selfish. Once thoughts of selfishness arise, false thoughts will follow. (translated by James Lan.)

The self reaches the end of empty space and pervades the Dharma Realm, so how can it be something? There is no past or present, no above or below, no others or self, no living beings or life span. People are transformed out of the great treasury of radiance.

Our greed stacks higher than the sky, piles thicker than the earth, and pools deeper than the ocean; like a bottomless pit, our greed can never be satiated. (translated by Sophia and Rui Liu.)

What is it that we’re cultivating? We’re cultivating to eradicate our false thoughts and desires; to be able to eradicate them is to have skill in cultivation.

Why do people have worry and fear? It is because they have lust. If they can eradicate lust, there will no longer be any worry or fear.

What does it actually mean for a man and a woman to be in love? No matter how appealing the physical appearance, it is but a skin bag inside filled with filthy stuff such as feces and urine. Defiled things constantly flow from the nine orifices: eye gum from the eyes, earwax from the ears, nasal mucus from the nose, saliva from the mouth, and urine and feces from the lower orifices. Which of these would you say is actually clean? (translated by James Lan.)

If you do not cultivate, there is no use even if Shakyamuni Buddha comes to teach you.

While being mindful of Guan Yin Bodhisattva, do not immediately look for others’ flaws upon seeing people. If you always find others’ faults, that means your suffering has not been eradicated and you haven’t cut off the root of your suffering yet. (translated by Sophia and Rui Liu.)

Wealth makes people confused; so do lust, fame, food, and sleep. These are the five roots of the hells, and all of us have planted them quite deeply. The roots of goodness are not planted deeply; these five roots, however, are planted deep into the ground. We think “Ah, they’re not deep enough; let’s plant them even deeper into the ground!” (translated by James Lan.)

Why will the world be destroyed? It is because people harbor fewer good thoughts and have more evil thoughts. One good thought increases the right energy in the world, while an evil thought increases the evil energy. We need to turn evil energy to auspicious and peaceful energy.

Cultivation means abiding with virtue at all times, by adhering to the basic rule of not violating virtue.

Those who are uncompassionate and unreasonable towards you are your good teachers. Only when you’re able to accept adversity with ease and be unmoved, can your patience be revealed. Do not allow a stray comment from others to move you. You need to cultivate to the state of being unmovable and be able to endure the unendurable, only then will you have true skills. Otherwise, you’ll have to start over again. (translated by Derrick Gan.)

Cultivators of the Way should be like water– stay humble, never fight for merit, and never be greedy for virtue; give good things to others and leave bad things for oneself.

Why do people become people? It is because we have emotional love, that we were born into the evil world of the five turbidities. If we can reduce our emotional love, then we will be reborn in other worlds, such as the Land of Ultimate Bliss or the Land of Vaidūrya. The ancients said, ‘If your emotional love weren’t heavy, you wouldn’t be born in the Saha World. If your karma is not emptied, you cannot be born in the Land of Ultimate Bliss.’ (translated by Katherine Wang.)

Being vigorous is being vigorous with your body and being vigorous with your mind. To be vigorous with your body, you recite sutras, bow repentances, practice Chan, or uphold mantras, i.e. use your body to cultivate. To be vigorous with your mind, you are always mindful; always vigorously cultivating precepts, samadhi, and wisdom; and extinguishing greed, hatred, and delusion. You are vigorous in the day as well as at night, always going forward and working hard, and never being lazy. You are always being mindful while cultivating, going forward courageously and vigorously, and being vigorous in the day and at night.

When we cultivate, vigor is very important. You have to be vigorous. If you are not vigorous, then you will not become a Buddha; if you want to become a Buddha, you must be vigorous.

Everyone’s body is a prison, it’s just that you do not realize it! (translated by Katherine Wang.)

Guan Shi Yin Bodhisattva looks inwards, while you look outwards; he observes his inherent nature. There exist electromagnetic waves that connect his inherent nature with other living beings’. Hence, Guan Shi Yin Bodhisattva knows every thought of every living being.

When one upholds the precepts, one is purifying one’s inherent nature and purging all its darkness. (translated by Derrick Gan.)

Hard work is to not fear hardships, to not fear difficulties, and to not fear fatigue. Only then can you see the results.

Atomic bombs, hydrogen bombs, and death rays — what are their roots? It is none other than greed, hatred, and delusion. Therefore, if we can extinguish greed, hatred, and delusion, atomic bombs will not explode anymore, hydrogen bombs will not detonate, and death rays will have no effect.

A good cultivator must maintain balance daily like a scale. What does it mean to be balanced? To be balanced means to always be calm and collected, to have no waves in one’s self-nature at all. This means affliction is Bodhi, and birth and death is nirvana.

Cultivators must practice renunciation upon renunciation until there is nothing left. Don’t be like worldly folks, who want more of everything. (translated by Ryan and Hubert Liu.)

If you want to end birth and death, you should hang the characters of birth and death on the tips of your eyebrows, so you can see them when you open your eyes, and not forget about birth and death when your eyes are closed. Only when you never forget to cultivate hard, can you end birth and death. (translated by Derrick Gan.)
